what are “traditional foods”? and a sneak peak inside my kitchen!

I dedicate my time to showing ladies with thyroid and autoimmune disease what to eat and why. I love teaching them which foods have healing therapeutic powers, and how to eat real foods without spending tons of extra money. But have you ever wondered what I eat and what’s hiding inside my fridge and pantry? Well here’s your chance to get a sneak peak! Cheeseslave highlighted my home kitchen and my many healing foods in her Real Food Kitchen Tour this week! (<— click!) Do you make any of these foods?

I also divulged the secrets of “traditional foods” this week for the San Antonio Current newspaper in San Antonio families returning to traditional food practices with ‘One Bite At A Time‘ (<— click!) — a must read for everyone with thyroid and autoimmune diseases, whether or not you’re local here in SA. These are the foods we need to be eating for our hormonal and immune health, and the foods we need to get reacquainted with in our modern world (it would make our great-great-great grandmothers pretty happy!).

And finally, I created a hormone-balancing weekly menu for Naturally Knocked Up (<— click!) last week. Just what should you be eating to balance your hormones? Check it out!

tune in LIVE this Tuesday 1 pm EST: Can desserts be thyroid-friendly? Interview with Natalia KW

Think dessert, and chances are it’s something full of carbs, starches, grains, gluten, dairy, chemicals, and sugars — all of which pull down the thyroid and suppress and/or over-stimulate the immune system. So how can we eat sweet treats that are still acceptable for special diets, allergen-free eating, and are stimulating to the thyroid and strengthening to the immune system?

Listen into BlogTalkRadio as live food chef and recipe book author, Natalia KW, and I chat about HEALTHY desserts and recipes from her latest and brilliant book, Pure Pleasures Cupcake Heaven. Discover what Natalia has been up to since our last interview and why it means such delicious things for you and I.

article: Three Gluten-Free Flours You’ve Never Heard Of

I’m a new Contributing Writer for Modern Hippie Mag, a site dedicated to all things green, sustainable, and healthy.  I’m honored to be putting my writing skills to good use for them and introducing a new group of people to holistic health, organic eats, and therapeutic nutritional strategies, via monthly articles.  This week I’m introducing you to “Three Gluten-Free Flours You’ve Never Heard Of“.  Can you identify these three and have you ever cooked/baked with them?

what’s an antinutrient and how many are you eating each day?

Whole grains, nuts, seeds, beans, and legumes are touted as nature’s perfect health foods, and sometimes, they can be.  However, in their most natural state, they actually contain toxic substances that draw vitamins and minerals out of the body.  This, of course, leads to major health problems and deficiency.  However, there are ways to eliminate (or decrease) the toxicity: soaking, sprouting, and fermenting the “seed”.

Unfortunately for us, most of our favorite foods are loaded with antinutrients that have not been properly processed: bread, rice, tortillas, nuts and seeds, soy products, processed foods made with corn, wheat, or other grains, and the list goes on.  Even green beans and English peas contain antinutrients (both members of the legume family).

Just how many antinutrients do you eat on a daily basis?  They’re most likely the reason behind any digestive distress, vitamin and mineral deficiency, and even chronic illness, especially goiter, thyroid disease, and autoimmunity.

How many are you eating each day?:

  • corn (tortillas, processed foods, popcorn)
  • white rice
  • brown rice
  • pasta
  • bread
  • dough (pastries, cakes, cookies, pizza)
  • crackers
  • breaded meats
  • flour sauces (roux) and gravies
  • hummus
  • peas
  • beans
  • lentils
  • nuts and seeds
  • processed food
  • green beans
  • soy (processed foods, unfermented tofu)

Do you think antinutrients could be partially to blame for your ailments? Have you ever tried to eliminate some antinutrients to regain vitamin and mineral balance?
